INTRODUCTION
Can you quickly explain what VoIP is?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet
How does one place or receive a VoIP phone call?
When using our IP Phone making a call is just like using a regular phone.
Can I call any phone or just VoIP phones?
With Connect IT you can call both voip phones and regular national and international landline phones.
How is the voice clarity?
Voice clarity is better than mobile calls and very close to a standard telephone call. The only thing that would have an effect on voice clarity is the quality of your broadband. Standard broadband - without line errors - is more than capable of carrying a clear voice call.
Do I need a computer to call?
No, you do not need a computer for phone-based VoIP services. We can provide an IP enabled phone for use with our service. A computer can be helpful to utilize and manage different features but is not required.
Can you give me a technical overview of VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. As the name suggests VoIP converts your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. If you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination. VoIP can allow you to make a call directly from a computer, or a special VoIP phone.
BENEFITS
What can a VoIP phone do that a landline phone cannot?
Connect IT's phone service can help you save up to 80% of your monthly phone bill. We also offer many features which are covered in the monthly fee, such as voicemail by email, caller ID, three-way calling, and call waiting. Additional advanced features include Call Queues and Interactive menus (IVR).
See our Features and Benefits section for more features.
What are the disadvantages of a VoIP phone?
Our IP phones require power to run, in the case of a power cut the physical phone will not work, however this is also true of physical PBX systems. In the case of a local failure our service can automatically reroute calls to a mobile or alternative number. Another disadvantage is for heavy internet users. Very large uploads and downloads can affect call quality this can usually be catered for by turning on Quality of Service (QoS) on your broadband router.
Can I keep my number?
In most situations we should be able to port your existing number, it is, however, dependent on your current provider.
Can I get a number of an area code other than mine?
Yes, our default numbers are Dublin based but we can provide other numbers on request. International numbers are also available but are priced individually and are subject to availability.
How many lines will I have?
You only need one broadband line to use the service. The amount of concurrent calls (lines) you can make will be dependent on the quality of your broadband connection but you should be able to 4-6 calls with a standard business broadband package - 3Mb down 256k up.
Can I take my number with me when I travel?
Yes you can, the Find me/Follow me feature allows you to set alternative numbers that you can be contacted on. Or you can use your IP phone to receive your calls, or a softphone on a PC, from any location that has broadband.
Can I try a service for a limited period?
We don't provide trials of the service but we can arrange a demonstration if required.
What are other useful features?
See our Features and Benefits page for useful features.
GETTING STARTED
How do I get VoIP working for me?
Fill in our online form here and we'll take care of the rest.
Do I need to be a computer expert?
For the phone-based services you do not need to be computer savvy, you just plug the phone into your broadband router and turn it on. Even using a softphone isn't difficult to set-up.
What kind of equipment do I need?
A broadband (high-speed Internet) connection is required. This can be a cable modem or a high-speed service such as DSL or a Local Area Network (LAN). If you require a handset they can be purchased directly from connect IT at €150 ex VAT. The handset come pre-configured for our service.
How fast does my internet connection need to be?
The average DSL or cable connection is usually sufficient. On a basic package you can expect to be able to make 3-4 concurrent calls. We recommend you go for a business grade DSL package as they tend to have lower contention rates.

Is there a set up fee?
The connect IT service is plug and play. As long as you have a working accessible broadband connection you should be able to plug your phone in or start your softphone and start using your virtual PBX. An onsite installation can be organised if required.
Can I use my computer during a call and does it have to be turned on all day?
Yes you can, the Connect IT service doesn't require a PC so it can be left off. Your phone does need to be turned on if you want to recieve calls otherwise callers will go straight to your voicemail.
